Even after several playthroughs, players may find themselves consulting the rule book to ensure a full understanding of each card’s function. Additionally, the box seems disproportionately large for its contents. Considering the game only consists of sand timers and cards, the excess space feels wasteful.

In the rocket phase, players begin by placing a rocket card at a designated launching site. If they possess all the necessary energy cards, the rocket can be launched towards a chosen meteor. Rockets always inflict damage as indicated on the card. When a meteor is struck for the first time, the player flips the card to determine if their rocket successfully destroys it. If their hit matches the required value, the meteor is obliterated. However, if the players fall short of the required value, no impact occurs. An intriguing twist arises when the damage inflicted surpasses the size of the meteor. Although the meteor is destroyed, the excessive force propels the remaining meteors closer to Earth, compelling an immediate move to the next altitude zone, regulated by the timekeeper.

It’s important to remember that all of these actions must be accomplished without verbal communication. Players can employ gestures, symbols, or any other means to convey their intentions. The timers commence once players are prepared, and the game concludes when all meteors have been eradicated or when they collide with Earth, leading to the destruction of humanity.

Personally, I would have preferred a concise text description on the cards explaining their effects. Even if you provide explanations before starting the game, players may still have inquiries, causing interruptions and detracting from the intense and suspenseful experience. While not a game-breaking issue, it seems like something that could have been addressed. Fortunately, the simplicity of the rest of the game compensates for any shortcomings with these cards.

I found the process to be less than elegant and somewhat cumbersome. Balancing the task of preventing the world from destruction while also keeping track of the timers proved challenging. I discovered that it works best when other players assist with the timers, taking turns managing them during different segments. This allows the timekeeper to enjoy the game more and helps maintain the five-minute schedule. Perhaps I am spoiled by the more streamlined approaches used in other games, but I believe there could have been a better solution, such as utilizing a phone or tablet application.

Each playthrough offers a unique experience as the meteors and resource cards vary. Additional cards, such as boss meteors with special abilities that activate upon placement or destruction, add further challenges for the players. Power cards are also available, providing advantages such as extra launch sites, card draw abilities, or enhanced rocket power. These become particularly valuable when facing off against boss meteors. Furthermore, for those who have become adept at destroying meteors, challenge cards can be introduced to significantly increase the game’s difficulty by imposing limitations or introducing new problems to solve. All these components work harmoniously together, introducing fresh elements and ensuring the game remains engaging with each playthrough.

Final Thoughts

Meteor proved to be a highly enjoyable game for me, perfectly suited as a filler to kickstart a gaming night. It strikes a great balance between simplicity and chaos, which is exactly what I seek in a real-time board game. Each playthrough offers a unique experience, and the inclusion of additional cards with new powers, boss meteors, and fresh challenges ensures even seasoned players find something new to enjoy.

The absence of verbal communication not only serves as an intriguing mechanic but also leads to entertaining moments as you strive to save the world. However, some of the iconography on the cards and less-than-perfect real-time elements occasionally disrupt the immersive nature of the game. Fortunately, these moments are infrequent, but they prevent the game from reaching true greatness.
